The Egyptian was operated by the American Cinematheque from 1998 until the struggling nonprofit organization sold the L.A. Historic-Cultural Monument to Netflix in 2020. A massive renovation, which the streamer dubbed a "rewind rehab" was intended to bring the venue closer to its original appearance. Major structural repairs and removal of additions from the 1990s — including the balcony and movable acoustic panels in the auditorium, and the micro cinema in the lobby — took more than two years, and were overseen by historic consultant Peyton Hall. The new configuration will have 516 seats, or about half the auditorium's original capacity. An expanded lobby area will be used for receptions and special events. A row of shops along the open forecourt will also be used for hospitality on show nights.
